Weather unsettled

As I drove east on the Snow Canyon Parkway at the north of Dixie Downs area in
St. George past the fishponds by the ball parks, I saw a man, a town employee,
using a spray cannister on the south bank of the pond north of the road.
What he was spraying, I don’t know but it was most likely weed killer.
When I drove back west later in the day, a man with a fishing rod was standing
on that same spot, his dog dutifully sitting to his side.
To the east of him on a bench sat a woman using a fishing rod.
On the north side of the pond were a man and woman and their little dog fishing.
The next day as I drove past the pond, the banks were crowded with people
fishing. Men, women and children.
What effect would that have on the fish?
On the people eating the fish?
What effect on the dog sitting on the spot where the poison was applied?
How about the people? The children?

The TV ad about the man spraying weed poison on a lone weed in a crack in’his
driveway and then playing basket ball with his children while the weed slowly
withered came to mind. Peace of mind or task done now fun.
Why couldn’t he have pulled the weed and then it would have been gone?

This reminded me of my next door neighbor to the west, out with a spray ccannister
slung over one shoulder and spray wand in that hand and his young daughter
slung over his other shoulder. No safety gear clad either one of them.

A few years back, I was painting in the rooms of a local motel.
The maids were cleaning and making the bed in one room while I painted the
small area I had to.
One of the maids screamed, “A cockroach.” She ran out and returned with a spray
can of poison and spray the bug right on the newly made bed spread.
Killing it and then removing the dead bug and then the exterminators were called.

Couldn’t she have ushered the bug into a pail or trash can, taken it out side and
killed it by stepping on it? Or even spraying the poison out side?

What did that poison do to the people who slept in that bed that night?
Even the paint fumes lingered. How did that effect the renters that night?
Later while doing some roof work at that same motel, under the roof tile, I saw
a goodly number of live roaches.

What had they done when the exterminator came?
They went to the roof. When it was safe in a few days, they returned downstairs.
Or the bugs go next door, some die but not all.
What happens to that weed killer? Bug killer?

A few years ago, my late wife was talking to the county weed control department
man on the phone. He told her that the poison for the weeds goes into the ground 3
or 4 inches and then won’t hurt people or animals. She replied to him, “Have you
even been in Ivins in a wind storm?”
The real estate moves here in a wind storm, sometimes scouring 3, 4, 5 or
more inches of the red sand off as it goes.
Where is that poison then?

What is the half life of some of these so called benign chemical concoctions?

Roundup:
“The half-life of glyphosate in soil ranges between 2 and 197 days;
a typical field half-life of 47 days has been suggested.
Soil and climate conditions affect glyphosate’s persistence  in soil.
The median half-life of glyphosate in water varies from a few to 91 days.”

2,4-D
“2,4-D was first used in the United States in the 1940s. Agent Orange, an herbicide
used during the Vietnam War, contained both 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. Dioxin,
a by-product of 2,4,5-T, led to the ban of Agent Orange.
2,4-D goes through different changes in the environment depending on its form.
Most of the time, 2,4-D breaks down in soil so that half of the original amount is
gone in 1-14 days. This breakdown time is called the “half-life” of the  pesticide.
One form of 2,4-D, the butoxyethyl ester, had a much longer half-life in aquatic
sediment of 186 days.
Aquatic animals are more sensitive to 2,4-D as water temperature rises.
2,4-D may be moderately toxic to practically non-toxic  to birds if they eat it.”

Bug poisons:

Raid
Raid is the brand name of a line of insecticide products produced by
S. C. Johnson & Son, first launched in 1956.

The initial active  ingredient was the first synthetic pyrethroid,  allethrin.
Raid derivatives aimed at particular invertebrate species can contain
other active  agents such as the more toxic cyfluthrin, another synthetic pyrethroid.
Currently Raid Ant & Roach Killer contains pyrethroids,  piperonyl butoxide, and
permethrin; other products contain tetramethrin,  cypermethrin and imiprothrin as
active ingredients Raid Flying Insect Killer, a spray, uses prallethrin and D-phenothrin.

“Aside from the fact that they are also toxic to beneficial insects  such as bees and
dragonflies, pyrethroids are toxic to fish and other aquatic organisms.
At extremely small levels,  such as 4 parts per trillion, pyrethroids are lethal to
mayflies, gadflies, and invertebrates that constitute the base of many aquatic
and terrestrial food webs.”

Pyrethroids have been found to be unaffected by secondary  treatment systems
at municipal wastewater treatment facilities in California.
They appear in the effluent, usually at  levels lethal to invertebrates.”

“Cyfluthrin is sensitive to breakdown by sunlight. On the surface of soils, its
half-life is 48-72 hours. It has a half-life of 56-63 days in German loam and sandy
loam soils, respectively, and has similar persistence in soils under conditions  of
low oxygen (anaerobic).
“Cyfluthrin is a pyrethroid insecticide and common household pesticide.
It is a complex organic compound and the commercial product is sold as
a  mixture of isomers. Like most pyrethroids, it is highly toxic to fish, invertebrates,
and insects, but it is far less toxic to humans. It is generally supplied as a 10-25%
liquid concentrate for commercial use and is diluted prior to spraying onto agricultural
crops and outbuildings.
Excessive exposure can cause nausea, headache, muscle weakness,
salivation, shortness of breath and seizures. In humans, it is deactivated by
enzymatic hydrolysis to several carboxylic acid metabolites, whose urinary excretion
half-lives are in a range of 5–7 hours. Worker exposure to the chemical can
be monitored by measurement of the urinary metabolites, while severe over dosage
may  be confirmed by quantification of cyfluthrin in blood or plasma.

Health and safety risks are controlled by right to know laws that  exist in most
developed countries. Cyfluthrin is regulated in the US by the EPA.”

Family loses 2nd child  in suspected pesticide poisoning
LAYTON, Utah — Three days after 4-year-old Rebecca Toone, of Layton,
died from apparent exposure to a pesticide, her 15-month-old sister, Rachel,
passed away.
Both girls died after having similar symptoms just days after their home
was treated to get rid of rodents.
A technician used the chemical Fumitoxin-the pellets used  mixed with
water to release deadly phosphine gas. It apparently migrated from the soil
into the home.

And what of pets? Like the two dogs by the fish pond?

Dr. Karen Becker wrote an article about it:
“Many pet guardians don’t realize the potential for exposing their
four-legged family member to environmental toxins like pesticides
and herbicides. People also don’t realize that after they apply a product
to their lawn or garden, the chemical residues are tracked indoors on
pet paws, and contaminate surfaces throughout their home.”
She goes on to tell  ills caused and prevention strategies.

I know of one chemical applicator who protects himself and family.
He always covers his hands and nose when spraying chemicals, has
shaved his head bald, bathes and changes his clothes before entering
his house and takes vitamins supplements to help counter the ill effects of
the chemicals he sprays.
But what of your family when he sprays your home or yard?

One local man found that his children got ill after the bug man came.
He solved the problem by starting his own bug company that uses only
orange oil to treat for bugs. The bugs dislike the strong smell of the oil
and stay out of houses treated with it. Problem solved without
harmful chemicals.

And what of weed control for the lazy who don’t want to pull or dig
the offensive weeds?

The use of used cooking oil, or fresh vegetable oil is just as effective
as the harsh chemical and cause no harm to the environment or people
or pets and wildlife.

Years ago, I was a Shaklee distributor.
One man in touting the merits of Basic H, the basic cleaner of the company,
and it is very good for many things, told of farm ground that was dead and
how he rejuvenated it.
My intent here is to tell why the farm ground was dead and no longer
able to produce so that the owners were selling it.
The soil of these dead farms had no worms, no microorganisms in them.
They were dead, sterile, devoid of life of any kind and hard as rock.
Why? Because of years of chemical application for different reasons.

Opinion Polls
Ever since the presidential election process got under way last year,
opinion polls have hit the internet in droves, papers and letters are full of them.
Answer this or that, who are you for today out of these limited choices, or what
ever else is trying to build credibility.
Of what value are opinion polls in the real world of creation and doing?

When I was a teenager, I happened to read a Mad Magazine issue.
The only thing I remember was one article.
I’ve dabbled in drawing over my life, even illustrated a book or two, so the
cartoon artwork really interested me.
But the thing about the piece that I found interesting then and still do,
is the one about Christopher Columbus and public opinion polls.
Would he have sailed had he conducted a poll first to see how popular
his idea was? The answer as set forth in the article was no.
Because in his world most people, even many in his crew thought it an
insane idea.
Many people will jump right in here with their opinion as to who first discovered
the Americas. This isn’t an opinion poll.
I’m trying to show that great things happen, not because of public
opinion but because there are people willing to do things regardless
of what the masses think.

Let’s see if an innovator in science, industry, manufactering looked to
public opinion before they did what they accomplished.

Frederick William Herschel was a musician-composer from Germany who
moved to England. What motivated a oboe, violin, harpsichord, organ player of
symphonies(he composed six) and church music come to constructing telescopes
and doing sky surveys?
I doubt that he asked his employers or fellow musicians of their opinion as to
how he should use his spare time.
An acquaintance, an amateur violinist, the Rev. John Michell of Thornhill,
a former leading Cambridge mathematics professor who was already noted
as England’s leading geologist and was developing groundbreaking views
on astronomy and the construction of telescopes.
This man sparked his interest in telescopes but he didn’t put out a poll to see
how many were in favor of his later endeavors.
Today Herschel is remembered not for his music but for his contributions to
science.

Now to industry and maufacturing , how about assembly line construction.
In 1913, Henry Ford installed the first moving assembly line for the mass
production of an entire automobile. His innovation reduced the time it
took to build a car from more than 12 hours to two hours and 30 minutes.
Was Ford the first to use this method in making things?
No but he applied it to an area not yet using it.
What if he’d polled his peer auto makers? He’d have gotten responses like
“can’t be done”. “why sacrifice quailty?”, “it will deminish profits”, etc.

So you want to do something, anything, should you conduct a poll first?
Not if you want to accomplish your designs. The Naysayers always
out number those who say why not and will encourage your ideas.

Today (4/26/2016) Yahoo News put out an article about the 17th amendment
and the election of Senators.
There were numerous comments and replies to comments.
I even added my 2 cents worth to some.
People love to give their opinion. They love to spew their prejudices out..
The internet has allowed the waste of millions of hours of time talking about
things we know nothing about.
We could all postulate that and other issues from now until doomsday
and it wouldn’t change anything in the world.

Are opinion polls of value?
They do influence some decisions some make.
But should they?

My role as first fireman in “The Still Alarm”

In August of 1972, I arrived in Provo, Utah to take my Junior year at Brigham Young University.
I’d been there in 1969 at the Language Training Mission for 2 months for a missionary course in German.
But this time I was majoring in Communications, with some classes in Opera and German.
I even took an evening sign language class.

I lived in the Tanner apartments in the block south of the lower campus on University Avenue.
The whole city block I lived on and one set of girls apartments in the block to the East comprised the LDS branch
I belonged to.
I was chosen as a Family Group Leader of a group of boys and girls apartments formed for social activities.

I was to perform in an Opera and several of the girls from the branch and the family group asked for comp tickets.
More asked than I could possibly come up with but the dilemma was solved when all the tickets to all the performances were
sold out leaving none available for comp tickets. So no one was upset with me not getting them tickets.

Student directed plays were performed in the old College Hall in the same room where we also had our church services.
I attended some of these fine shows.

Two girls in my branch were in the acting course at the University.
One was in my family group.
One day she came to me and asked if I’d help with a course assigned play she was directing.
Would I play the part of the main fireman in George Kaufman’s Comedy of the absurd “The Still Alarm”.
Sure, I’d help her.

We rehearsed and got costumes and showed up in a theater room the class used on the main campus in the Fine Arts Building
for dress rehearsal.

The play consists of 5 characters: Ed and Bob, hotel guests, a bellboy, and two fireman.
The plot is that the two guests are talking when they are informed that they will have to go to another hotel as the one they are in is on fire.
They talk about the bother this would be but don’t seem to be in any rush to pack their belongings and leave.
The temperature rises as the fire intensifies.
Presently two firemen come in and ask if it is alright for them to check on the fire from the room’s window.
That is perfectly fine with Ed and Bob.
Wanting to be polite, one of the men offer the firemen a cigar, which they accept. The one fireman goes to the window and puts
the cigar into the rising flames and lights it.
They all continue on in polite conversation when the other fireman pulls a violin out of his case and asks if it is agreeable for him to play
a number on it. (Our violin player was a girl but in her fire suit no one could tell she wasn’t a man.)
It is agreeable and the fireman proceeds to play “Keep the Home Fires Burning” while the two men and the other fireman sit and politely listen.
We concluded with the three man audience wiping their brows and enjoying the music.

The instructor of the directing class was a Charles Metten.
He critiqued the performance.
His biggest concern was that of us using the cigar even though we had only mimed it’s use.
That wasn’t in compliance with church standards of not smoking even if we only gave the appearance of it.
It would have to be something different.
We actors left that problem with the director.

When the performance day arrived, we showed up and just before we went on, the girl director told us of her plan to demonstrate the hot temperature.
The firemen would be offered chocolates in a bowl. The chocolates would be melted, just a liquid.
We had no time to rehearse.
We were on.

The play progressed fine.
When the chocolates were offered to the fireman, I was the first and dipped my finger into the liquid and pulled it out dripping chocolate behind.
I had an odd look on my face of surprise as I did this, or so it appeared to the audience.
But in reality I was trying desperatly not to burst into laughter.
I licked my finger off and thanked for the chocolate.
The audience erupted into laughter.
Then we sat back to listen to the violin.

We were so happy that we’d got through that part that I didn’t say something like, “Ah, Keep the Home Fires Burning”, my favorite song.” Or something like that
to let the audience know how that particular song fit the play even though we did.
When the play was first written, it would not have been necessary as eveyone was familiar with it.
The instructor graded our director down on that point
but up on the creative use of the chocolate which was not only the hit of the show but of all the shows that day.

The point of this story is to say that when one keeps a play or film or any performance clean, in this case in adherence to church standards,  the said entertainment can be a greater success than if those standards weren’t upheld.

St. George, Utah

Today being Saturday, I had great plans for all the work around the house and at the farm that I’d get done.
But stopped all that early to drive into St. George to the Dixie Center to listen to US Presidential canditate John Kasich.
(John Richard Kasich,current governor of Ohio, first elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2014.
On July 21, 2015, he announced his candidacy for the 2016 Republican nomination for President of the United States.
John Richard Kasich (/ˈkeɪsᵻk/ kay-sick; born May 13, 1952) Kasich was born in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania, an industrial town near Pittsburgh.
He and wife have twin daughters age 16.
Kasich served nine terms as a member of the United States House of Representatives, representing Ohio’s 12th congressional district from 1983 to 2001. His tenure in the House included 18 years on the House Armed Services Committee and six years as chairman of the House Budget Committee. He was a key figure in the passage of both welfare reform and the Balanced Budget Act of 1997.
He was a commentator on Fox News Channel, hosting Heartland with John Kasich from 2001 to 2007.
He also worked as an investment banker, a managing director of Lehman Brothers’ Columbus, Ohio, office.
In the 2010 Ohio gubernatorial election, Kasich defeated Democratic incumbent Ted Strickland. He was re-elected in 2014, defeating Democrat Ed FitzGerald by 30 percentage points.)
I arrived at 4:15 but wasn’t late as Govenor Kasich hadn’t yet arrived.
I conversed with a friend and a man standing by him about local government waste and who has any say about what happens.
About 4:30 the program began with St. George Mayor Jon Pike, then State Representative Lowry Snow and State Senator Stephen Urghart, and Former State Govenor Mike Leavitt all in turn introducing Governor Kasich and telling why they support him.
Leavitt spoke the longest telling of things that Kasich did while in Washington DC. And saying that Kasich has the Temperament, Experience and Savvy to be a good president.
He also told of convention balloting history of the first ballot and beyond and results.
Leavitt ended with saying,”Vote for the candidate you think will make the best president of the United States.”
Finally in came John Kasich to an uproarious applause.
“How beautiful it is here,” he said, “It’s amazing!” “There is not a more beautiful state.”
After some comments about Mike Leavitt, “Look where he’s gone”, he started tell about himself.
He first mentioned going to Washington DC at age 30 and staying for 18 years.
Then about work on the Federal Budget and the high cost of tools, etc. purchased by the government like, “…this wrench cost $20,000”, forcing the several branches of the military to work together, and other thing which made enemies for him.
He told of his home town of McKees Rocks and about his father and mother, of the conservative, common sense people of the town and area, good people who play by the rules, about unemployment and how it effected families he knew.
“It’s hard to realize one’s purpose without work.”
He spoke to some girls seated near the front on one side of the platform (a sort of theater in the round) about the specialness of each person.
He even hugged one of the girls and a second time so her mother could snap a photo of it on her phone .
“We were made for a purpose …to heal the world.”
We can all make small changes for the good like taking a widow out to something like a meal to make her life less drab.
“Those things will be noted.”

Then on to issues.
The people should have the say on things.
-Twice he pointed out the LDS Church welfare system of people helping people.
“It’s a sin to not help someone in need but it is also a sin to help him whenhe can help himself.”
-the Education System should be controlled by the state and local school board.
-the people write the rules
-training for jobs that exist should be given
-job training
-Infrastructure monies should stay in the states and no by way of Washington

-“The Spirit of the country rests in us.”
How?
“By taking the gifts the good Lord gave us and making a better world one person at a time.”

People say thing are horrible now but should compare now to the great depression or to WWII.
“Sure we have our problems, we can solve them.”
How?
“By getting rid of goofy politics.”

There are 3 Essentials to good government
1- federal regulations made by Congress not by bureaucrats and helping small business cut regulations that hinder business.
2- tax reform especially business taxes
3- “Don’t spend more than you take in.” (spoke of debt and interest on debt)
He gave the US 4 years of balanced budget with a projected surplus.

Ideas on other issues:
-fix and protect the borders
-have illegals who have not committed crimes pay a fine and taxes and no citizenship but don’t kick them out
-make Social Security secure
-assure Veterans medical help
-“We are Americans before we are anything else”… “we must be united”.

“I will not take the low road to the Presidency.”

-don’t leave anyone behind, ie. mentally ill, substance addiction persons
( an example was a young man who spoke to him in Salt Lake City yesterday who is recovering and thinks he’ll make it, Kasich phoned the young
man’s mother, Mary, a personal friend of his, to tell her about it.)

He’s held about 200 town hall meetings across the country so far.

Then he opened the meeting up to Questions.

The first question was about adherence to the Constitution.
In the reply, Gov. Kasich said, “Government should be the last resort not the first.”
Again he mentioned Welfare Square in Salt lake City. There is a proper order family, church, government.
“People helping people” “I’ve talked about it all over the country,” he said referring to the way the LDS church
handles welfare.

Next Question was about BLM and other land issues.
“I need to learn more about it.” The States need more control-states must gain the power and control.
“It’s out of balance.”
“We have to convince government workers that they work for us.”
Then he told a story of he and his twin daughters in Florida 5 years ago.
“Daddy, what’s that box over there?” They were referring to a phone booth and couldn’t believe how people used to make calls.
“Everything changes”.
When government increases so does the debt. The solutions are to be found in innovation.
“Innovation is the order of the day.”

Next a suggestion for Vice President Mike Leavitt
Next a lady thanked him for coming to St. George and said, ‘Don’t leave the race as you are an asset.”
Governor Kasich said we must ask a few questions: Who is electable? Who can be the best president?
“These debates are not a good way to chose a president.”
He mentioned his time at Fox News and not doing all the things the media wants done.

Next a 13 year old girl asked, “What is the first thing you’d do as president?”
He invited her onto the stage with him.
“Get people to get along with each other and work together.”
Then he had her help him with the 3 most important tings in his mind.
1-Jobs
2-Jobs
3-Jobs

Next was asking about health care, immigration, and other topics.
-Obamacare “doesn’t work”
-he’d talked about immigration before
-In Maine he asked a man if he’d lived there his whole life to which the man replied, “Not yet.”
and to a woman about the governor of the state. She was upset about losing her medical insurance
He doesn’t want anyone to suffer and suggested changes because politicians don’t know anything about medical issues.
In Ohio, he used the free market system to fix medical over charging, etc.

Next a guy mentioned a family member in Afghanistan and questioned about foreign policy.

“Isis has to be destroyed!” The Islamic Brotherhood also.
There are Arab states on our side for example Egypt, Jordan, the gulf States, European friends.
Working together with them we can destroy Isis. “We go in and destroy and come home.”
He suggested arming the Ukrainians so they can defend themselves from Russia.
“China doesn’t own the South China Sea.”
“Stand by Israel.”
Take out hackers.
Mexico: “full of corruption”.
“Canada has good hockey players.”
“Only commit troops when our interests are at peril.”
“Don’t get involved in Civil Wars.”
“Afghanistan: “teach them and leave.”
North Korea: give missile defense to South Korea and Japan
Pakistan: is complicated and serious-
“‘regime change’ may be the answer.”
Turkey: “must get it stable.”
Iran: “suspend the nuclear agreement”.
Brazil: “is a mess”
Cuba: “must have human rights first.”

Next question was about the National debt.
“We had a surplus when I left Washington but the Republicans blew it.”
*”Democrats love to spend. Republicans do too, they just feel guilty about it.”

Next question was “What is morality’s and Spirituality’s effect on government?’
A person from the crowd yelled, “Not Enough!”
His remark got a great laugh from those assembled.

Governor Kasich told of a songs lyrics, “I was just a slob on the bus on my way home.”
Everyone makes errors and can only try to do better the next day.
But there is a great need for moral behavior and “personal responsibility’ in government.
He said he know religion matters but “I don’t want to cheapen religion to get elected.”

Then he said goodbye but stayed a while in the roped off stage area to talk to individuals and shake hands.
He have way shook mine as his whole attention was on the guy next to me who was wearing a Ohio State shirt.

I spoke to a man as I left who said he felt that Governor Kasich is a sincere good man but not conservative enough for him,
I had to agree somewhat.

In other presidential elections I’ve gotten to meet other Presidential candidates in St. George.
One was a professor from New Hampshire running on the American Party ticket.
He was a very intelligent man.
I meet Bo Gritz when he ran on the American-Independent ticket and collected voting totals of his campaign.
That is another interesting story.
Then Alan Keyes was here in St. George when he ran on the Republican ticket.

Of John Kasich, who is like the current president younger than me, he is a good man.
I found the other three I mentioned more accessible. No body guards and each of them had time to stop and talk to
little people one on one for an extended length of time. No they didn’t get elected but should have been.

The President is important. But so is Congress.
Which ever one of the Republicans gets elected, that person should take some if not all of his rivals and fill his cabinet with them.
It might not be good for his agenda, but as Abraham Lincoln knew, it would be good for the country.

I’m glad I got a phone call on Thursday telling me about this event because I’d have missed a great opportunity to be a part of our
nation’s future.

I remembered wrong on the party of two of the former candidates according to Wikipedia.
It states that Bo Gritz was American Party and Alan Keyes was America’s Independent Party.
But what does it matter?
Abraham Lincoln served in the Illinois legislature as a Whig Party
member and also in Congress in DC as a Whig.
He stumped for other Whig Party candidates for various offices.
He even ran for US Senate against Stephen Douglas as a Whig.
But when he and others felt that “the Whigs had strayed from principle” he was involved in the founding of the
Republican Party.
When he ran for re-election for President in 1864, he ran on the National Union Party ticket.
Lincoln was more about principle and less about party affiliation.
So were Gritz and Keyes.
So  should we be.

My Song Story

Brendon Burchard, the Experts Academy guy says that a person’s story is very important in creating trust.

Okay, so then here is my singing story.

I was born in Santa Clara, Utah in 1950.
My parents both sang.
My father would soothe the cows temperament so that he could milk them.
(the cows took exception to my singing attempts while milking.)
My mother sang to entertain herself while working.
I Listened and learned.
We had an RCA Victrola in the living room with 78 and 45 rpm records and a radio.
I used it a lot and listened to the radio too.
The town I lived in had elementary school 1 through 6 grades.
With three teachers, 1 & 2, 3 & 4, and 5&6.
The 5th and 6th teacher was a man and the principle.
When I got to those grades it was taught by Arlo Hafen.
He said what one lacked in ability, one could compensate for with volume and gusto.
Everyone seemed to be musical.
His wife Ramona was my piano teacher.
We learned songs and sang for every occasion.
Church was one ward of the LDS faith.
We sang in Primary, Sunday School, Sacrament meeting, and other meetings.
Wednesday night was Mutual Improvement and the opening exercises always included song and song instruction and
plays with song were presented.
Every class group sang at Christmas, Easter, and on other occasions.
As a teenager, I even did a solo one evening of “Brother Can You Spare a Dime.”

I was a boy soprano.
And very good I think because people would turn around in church to listen to me and then tell me I was.
Once in a boys chorus, one of Arlo’s nephews (from a very musical family) said I was the best in the group.
He had a brother who had made a record with a group he was in.
And another brother with Downs Syndrome
He is the reason I don’t lead or direct music.
At 12, I was asked to direct the song in a meeting. Afterwards, this brother
informed me that I couldn’t lead. He was right. I couldn’t stay on the beat.
This boy was no dunce when it came to music.
Later in his life he attended the state school for the mentally challenged. While there he started a band.
He taught the other students to play the instruments and he lead them in some wonderful performances.

When I was 12 or 13, I was involved in a stake (a church term for a group of several wards-local units).
We were to perform in the St. George Pioneer Tabernacle at a stake conference.
(The Tabernacle had hosted the first Catholic Mass in St. George sung by the LDS ward choir under the direction of John Menzies MacFarlane, author of Far, Far Away On Judea’s Plains.)
Boys and girls from all the wards in the stake participated.
The director was a lady from the Gunlock Ward.
We had sung the song we were to perform through once and the director said someone sounded off.
We would sing it through again and she would listen and determine who was off.
We sang it again.
When done, all the boys around me pointed to me and said, “It’s Him! He’s off!”
The director said, “No, Jay was right on just two octaves below everybody else.”

And I had become a bass forever more.

Sixteen years ago the road in front of my house was widened.  In the process four of my mulberry trees were torn out.

The contractors were related to me and kindly moved the torn out trees to a vacant lot to the west of my house.
I was able to then cut them up for firewood.
It took me a while with chainsaw, axe, and wedges over several weeks to get the task completed.
As I neared the end, one stump kept dulling my chain saw blade in just a minute or two.
Finally I gave that up and took the wedges and sledge hammer and split the log.
In so doing the culprit for dulling the chain was revealed. It was a metal rat tail file.
The file was still in good shape except for the spot where it and the saw chain had met.
A distant cousin of mine had grown up in the house where I live, his parents being the people who built the house.
I told him about my experience and he said, “I always wondered what happened to that file.”
Left in the crouch of the tree, it had in the ensuing years become completely encased by the tree with no outward sign that anything was inside.
This evening I told that story to C. Asay,  a retired veterinarian doctor.
He told of a horse shoe he once placed in a tree and over the years watched as “the tree ate it”.
“That may be a problem for someone like the file someday.” he said.
My goodness, the trees are alive. Yikes!
There may then be a lot of truth to the song that says “The hills are alive” if the trees do in fact slowly eat things.
I’ve seen photos of a bicycle grown over and high up in a tree and other things being encased by trees.
But the one I find most amusing is the one just west of the current county library in St. George, Utah on 100 South street.
Several years ago I saw and photographed a sycamore tree firmly holding a “No Parking” sign as if the tree was the natural frame for the sign.

I thought that was so true, one had better not park here to long or else the tree would get a hold on them.

Two weeks ago I was taking photos of the fine old houses on that tree lined street, one of the loveliest streets in town.
I noticed the sycamore tree too. But where was the sign? So I took a photo or two.

Upon examining the photos, it looks to me as though I can still see the letters of the sign in the smooth outside bark of the tree.

That tree really meant it when it said “No Parking” for it ate the sign sure as shooting.

I’ve been reviewing my over 10K comment files at this website the last two or three weeks.
I’m down to around 6K left to look at.

Last week I actually got two real comments from a man I know who lives in South East Asia.

One man suggested I post about all of my social media sites.
Seemed like a real comment but all those things are linked to on my home page in the link column so why make a post about them?

One comment tonight, asked if the comments sounded like they came from brain dead people.

Most are trash generated by machines or software that has made the sellers of it rich
at the expense of lost money, sales, and hopes of the now poor website owners who wanted to somehow automate their advertising.

One comment asked if I get hacked alot. One asked if palgerism is a problem.

These sound fairly real at first clance but after seeing the same message word for word in other comments on other pages,
you can soon see that they are machine generated too.

Some start out saying words like “your blog is fastidious”.
“Hi, its fastidious piece of writing on the topic of media print, we all understand media is a great source of data.
Also visit my webpage :: mopile applications”
No one talks like that. Must be a computer generated translation.

Some asked how I built the site.
It says right on it thtat it is built on WordPress.
A real person would have seen that.

There are a great many drug, prescription medicine, supplement ads in the comments. All at cheaper prices than be had elsewhere.
Which is true. I used to have an online prescription site.
But to put these in the comments on an unrelated sit by a machine is counter productive.
They sell Viagra or some other drug. some in a single line comment others in longs lists.
Why would I ever go to them or give them a back links?

Back links may be important but a thousand such links from sites no one has or will ever hear about,
aren’t worth as much as one good back link from a major company, internet provider such as Google,
or major online presence like a “dot gov”.
Two weeks ago I spent 2 & 1/2 hours one evening deleting over 3500 prescription ads all in Greek.
I don’t read or speak Greek and even find the alphabet impossible to read.
Why would a back link company put such ads on my site?
The buyer was cheated.
I’ve never even had a site hit from Greece.
A waste of my time and the advertisers money.

Here are more examples of the kind of spam I’ve received.

No one talks likes that.

Then they ask advise about blogging, hackers, html code, or how to earn money from blogging.
Every comment is the same. the chances of multiple real people ever saying this same thing are astronomical.

Comments suggesting link exchanges are similar.

Here is a often used one:
“My spouse and I absolutely love your blog and find nearly all
of your post’s to be exactly what I’m looking for.
Would you offer guest writers to write content for you?
I wouldn’t mind composing a post or elaborating on a number of the subjects you write with regards to here.
Again, awesome web site!”

All of these automated comments are the same and placed on the Policy page, rate schedule or some other odd page on my site
that no real person would read and comment on.

Or they are from the same author such as “Mark” “Stefan” “Sandra” etc.
or from the same company name such as back links, etc.

Some have nothing to do with anything:
“My coder is trying to convince me to move to .net
from PHP. I have always disliked the idea because of the costs.
But he’s trying none the less. I’ve been using Movable-type on various websites for about a year and am
concerned about switching to another platform. I have heard very good things about blogengine.net.

Is there a way I can import all my wordpress content into it?
Any kind of help would be really appreciated!

Here is one that hit my comment review box in December 2015, I’m just now deleted this backlink trash.
“Hey there. Im from Anonymous. I am a doxxor. I have doxxed the bloodlines of a group of families. I have traced them to 4400 BC
and have detailed all of their plans, lineage, blood type, and many many other things.
No one has ever lived long enough to do this before. No one has ever released this much info, this detailed info.
Please look at htp:/saianarchy.com to see a sneak preview. Release on friday december 18…dont miss it! It will be up as long as I’m alive.”
( I’ve changed the link so as to save you from such garbage)
The next comment from someone else was a word perfect copy of it.

Or how about this:

The other cool feature of Google+ is Google Hangouts which can be essentially a face-to-face video communication feature allowing
friends to video conference. The more +1s a website or article gets, the

Which has nothing to do with anything.

Some even go into long articles that make no sense what soever then have the links at the end.
The back link company was most likely trying to fool the spam filters on different site by jumbling the words up.
Many seem to be real comments about my site but when i look at the page they were posted on, it become apparent that a person
didn’t make it because the comment has nothing to do with that particular page. Comments like, “just the information I was looking for.”
Oh really?

Example:
“Great blog here! Also your website loads up very fast!
What web host are you using? Can I get your affiliate link on your host?

I desire my site loaded up as quickly as yours lol

Also visit my site villa prices in las vegas,(name)” (the name is linked to the person’s site)

Looks okay at first glance but when hundreds of others show up saying exactly the same thing excepting
for the the link name because it is someone else’s machine generated lead-back link.

Then there are the Seo ads.
“You could be getting more hits…”
“May I make some suggestions…”
etc.

Well, it’s late and I’m getting tired.
I’ve put 376 into the spam folder to delete this session. Only 300 pages more to go though, 5,827 more comments to review.
If I find ten in all that are real comments by real people I will be surprised.

Oh, spam machines stop wasting your clients money sending this trash to me.

Which language do you want to read this in?

Okay, I’ve checked this page a few times.

I looked at the German scripts as I speech German.

But how is it pronounced?

You surely need to buy the program for that feature.

I recorded my take of  “Those were the Days” on the Sing Snap Karaoke site online.

And thought,  “What about the Russian? After all it was a Russian song “By the Long Road.”

I found three versions on You Tube in Russian and listened after I’d found the lyrics.

The trouble with Russian or Greek, is that is uses a different writing.

But I found a phonetic set of lyrics and a translation to English.

That made it easier but my oh my those sounds.  Not even sure if I hear what the ladies are singing.

I found a solution so  can learn it and how to sing it in Russian.

A child learns by only hearing.   For me hearing someone say the words in the language is really important.

I can read along and learn how to spell at the same time.   Spanish is much easier for me but I still need that

hearing how it is said.

So I’m going to study the scripts that are free and use the pronunciation tool and see what happens.

Maybe I can later upgrade and get it at this site.
